Volunteers

Officiating

Officials are a crucial part to hosting a race. Please consider this volunteer opportunity, especially if you expect to be at any of the club races as a parent. You do not need any biathlon experience, or even any previous race volunteer experience. The courses teach you what you need to know, and we’ll help you put it into practice.

Officials training begins with your choice of online course modules which can be done at your pace, or a “live” weekend course. The Vancouver Island Biathlon Club will pay your registration fee for the course.

For more information about the different officials courses, please check out the Biathlon Canada website.

If you are interested in taking any of these courses please contact the Program Coordinator at vibcprogrammer@gmail.com.

Coaching

The Vancouver Island Biathlon Club is looking for more coaches to further develop our programs. Even if you are not a retired Olympic Biathlete, you can still contribute a tremendous amount. We are looking for people who have either some shooting experience, or skate skiing experience, or both, who are interested in developing their own skills and helping to advance others’.

This is a supportive environment for you to develop your shooting, skiing and coaching skills. If you’re willing to be a coach – the club will sponsor your education and training. In return for your commitment to coach in one of the club’s programs, the club will pay for your course registration fee, and support you through ongoing Coaching Refresher workshops. These coach training opportunities are open to all members of the club regardless of your current shooting or skiing ability.

The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) of Canada is used by ski and biathlon clubs across the country. It is a competency-based approach, and focuses on experiential learning and the needs of the participants. The program is designed with the Long Team Athlete Development (LTAD) Model in mind and certification is based on the coaches’ abilities, and doesn’t rely on purely “text-book” knowledge. Many coaches taking this course find that their own abilities improve throughout the learning process!

Through Biathlon Canada, there are two streams for coach education.

  • The Community level courses: Bronze, Silver and Gold, offer a more recreational/skill development focus, perfect for coaching Bears or Masters.
  • Competition level courses: Competition Introduction, and Competition Development, as well as levels 4-5.

For more information about the different coaching courses, please check out the Biathlon Canada website.

Criminal Record Check

Anyone coaching children under the age of 19 is required to have a Criminal Record Check (CRC) done every three years, to ensure the safety of our children and youth participating in sports. All information is handled with complete confidentiality. This process can now be done online, which makes everything a lot easier!

To complete this process, please contact our Program Coordinator at vibcprogrammer@gmail.com. Our Program Coordinator will provide you with the website and Access Code to complete your online CRC form.

Criminal Record Checks must be completed and submitted prior to the start of the programming. Your participation is very much appreciated and valued by Vancouver Island Biathlon Club!
